Hydroponic is the perfect complement to MicroFarming

Hydroponic is the perfect complement to MicroFarming

Even if we, in the Osa Peninsula, have conditions so favourable for traditional and Organic production of vegetables and fruits, it is a good idea to integrate these system with an Hydroponic or, even better, an Acquaponic  system, for to produce that specific vegetable that could have problems with the natural conditions and need a special environment in term of PH and Nutrients that only Hydroponic can obtain.

A study Starting Hydroponic System in the Osa Peninsula, for vegetables compatibilty to the local environment and climate

Basil and Green Beans are growing fast in a study Starting Hydroponic System in the Osa Peninsula, for vegetables compatibility to the local environment and climate

At the level of the sea, the temperature is a quite hot, for some variety of vegetables, but we need to experiment on them for to see which one is the most adaptive to these conditions, and exclude the ones that definitely can’t develop in a good way.

In the last months we started this experimental small project of Hidroponic, using the NFT technique, for to learn about the details of this vegetable production way, and define which product are the more compatibles with this environment.

for example we found that the variety of lettuce we choose for to start the proves, is not working finer, due to the high temperature, that push it to try to produce seeds too soon, obligating the plants to grow more vertical instead to create a big head, but the new batch of a different variety, will be fine.

So, now we are refining the technique and the results are really interesting, demonstrating that thnis technique is available for everyone, and that can produce great vegetables in this environment.

Our experience will be at disposition of everybody wil be interested in starting an Hydroponic project in ine of the lands apt for to create a Micro Farm for personal food production and, why not, for market too.

Be free to ask for any information about this specific Micro Farm area and the land we have available fro to start your Food Production Farm in the Paradise of the Osa Peninsula.

Fresh Water Spring is like Gold for a Micro Farm Project

Clear, Fresh, and Sweet Waters……

Italian Poet Francesco Petrarca’s poem for her beloved Laura, contains the spirit, the essence, of what we feel when in presence of a natural spring, in the middle of the pristine Rainforest of the Osa Peninsula, even if we don’t know which beautiful young woman took a bath in it before our discover.

In the whole world, Pure Fresh Water is becoming rarer every day more, and the access to this precious, indispensable resource is more and more difficult, at the point that there is more than one ” Prophet ” of the next future that is talking about ” Water Wars” that will start soon for the control of this liquid gold.

It is true that, from some year already, big financial and industrial groups had took the control of several local brands that are bottling and selling fresh water for human feeding , moving, their range of interest to the public water services that feed the principal metropolis of the world, creating, often, strong opposition from the population that would have this resource managed by local or state government, for to avoid the monopolistic affect over a resource that is absolutely indispensable for Human life.

The same Importance, or more, has the presence of Fresh Water for a Micro Eco Farm in a Tropical Area as the Osa Peninsula in the South Pacific side of Costa Rica.

Here the abundant rains help the Micro Farmer for a lot of different cultivation, including rice, that doesn’t need to be planted in flooded soil, as it happens in most of the world , but several other crops, need water even, and specially, during the dry season.

So, for to be sure that your micro Farming Project will be a success, the most important feature that a Small Farm must have is the presence of enough water that is available from a spring that is inside the same land, just for to be sure to have a full control over this resource.

A good Fresh Water Spring, would produce enough water for the house needing as tap water for the kitchen, the shower and W.C.,  the animals present in the Micro Eco Farm, and , of course, the irrigation of the vegetables crops that will be the Organic Food on the wise Micro Farmer .

The right time for to check the abundance of the Fresh Water you will have at your disposition in your Micro Eco Farm, is during the dry season, when Fresh Water Spring are not fed by superficial waters produced by the rain. If you have a good flow of water during the months from Decembre to April, in the Osa Peninsula, you can be sure that you will never have Water Problems, and that your Fruits and Vegetables will grow quick and tasty.

The Presence of a Perennial Fresh Water Spring in a Micro Eco Farm, often offers natural ponds, carved by the flow of the water in the last thousand years, in the soil of the rainforest that covers the hill sides, ponds that, often, have high end design shapes and surfaces surprisingly smooth, that are perfect natural bath tubs, great for anti-stress and revitalizing ablutions.

Why Micro Farming in the Osa Peninsula – Costa Rica

The variety of environments that composes the Osa Penisula is really impressive and makes of this area an unique combination of soils, exposition to sun and breeze, kinds of natural coverage, pollinating animal species, availability of fresh water from creeks and rivers, mountain springs, and lowland marshes with small chalk streams, offering so many possibilities for the Micro Farmer for to find the best location, for  the specific production is planned to be the main activity of the Micro Farm.

The main activity, for decades, in the Osa Peninsula, had been the cattle breeding, based on the extensive livestock farming that needed aggressive deforestation with the technique of the slash and burn for to create enough surface for to raise the number of animals necessaries for the surviving of families that were involved in this activity.

Normally a medium cattle farm was, depending by the quality of the soil and, consequently, of the forage, sizing from 5-10 hectares up to hundreds, with an average of 20-40 hectares, that is still the actual average size of the lands available for to develop a Micro Farming Project.

Nature is quite generous here, with a temperature that never goes under the 20 Celsius degrees, and never over the 32, with an average rainfall precipitation of 5000 millimetres and a very predictable cycle of dry, wet and strong rain seasons, that allow local farmers  to calculate when to start the necessaries practices for the different cultivations.

Depending by the main production or agricultural practice that will be the core of a Micro Farm, the choice of the size of the land, the distribution of it, the kind of soil and  the amount of water, the presence of existent trees coverage, the orientation and altitude, the availability of electric grid and easy road access, are all factors that must be analyzed with attention and wisdom.

Here is where the knowledge and support of our group of local small farmers with decades of experience with local production of vegetables, fruit, grains and farm animals, is making the difference between a project with some possibilities of success and one with a full success granted.

There are hillside properties that had been dedicated to cattle breeding until few years ago, and now the abandoned pasture lands are covered by a fast re-growing vegetation dominated by small bush and few pioneer tree variety, that would be great for to start some kind of plantation of fruit trees that need some little-medium shadowing for the first step of their life, or just cleared and utilizing the existent vegetation as a base for the humus needed for some vegetable cultivation.

There are lowland properties with a soil deposited there by centuries of river flooding that has an high percentage of sand and organic debris, that is more apt for the production of  several kind of potatoes and Yucca ( Manioca ) that, often, reach record sizes.

Forest lands too, offer interesting opportunities for to start some very specific cultivation of plants that need medium or deep shadow, as some variety of semi-wild coffee, forest fruits, Cocoa, medicinal plants, etc. etc.

Cocoa Trees need the shadow of dense and semi-dense forest for to grow and produce their fruits, a great cultivation for an Eco Forest Micro Farm

So, the choice of the land that will be a new Micro Farm, is depending by a lot of different factors that, often, are difficult to be analyzed by a person that doesn’t has too much experience with farming, but the good new is that, here, in the Osa Peninsula, there is for sure that land that is perfect, or the closest is possible, for any Micro Eco Farm Project, and our group of experienced small farmers, Bio and Eco specialists, Architects and home builders and  Realtors with 20 years of life in this area, are available for to make real the dream of owning and running with success an  Eco Micro Farm with the goal of obtaining a full food self-sufficiency and, possibly, be able to sell the surplus on the local market.

No budget is too small, just contact us and tell us what is your dream, and we will find a solution for to make it real.
